Hela's full game supports solo play, two-player local split-screen and online co-op for up to four players. You can combine local and online play, with no more than two local players per device and four players in the session. These limits come from the official developer FAQ.
Playing the demo? The online mode is different
The Steam demo supports two-player local split-screen and two-player Remote Play Together. It does not include the full game’s native four-player online mode. Only the host needs to download the Steam demo for Remote Play Together.
Use our demo download and invitation guide for the official steps. The player counts and mixed-session arrangements below describe the announced full game, rather than the trial. The developer’s demo instructions explain that distinction.
Choose a mode for your group
| Mode | Players | Arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Explore on your own |
| Local split-screen | 2 | Share one device |
| Online co-op | Up to 4 | Connect online |
| Mixed local + online | Up to 4 | Maximum 2 local players per device |
For two people in the same room, local split-screen is the straightforward mode to consider. If everyone plays remotely, online co-op is the relevant option. A larger group sharing some devices can use the mixed arrangement below.
Solo play remains a complete adventure, with the Shade System assisting with interactions designed for multiple mice. The official Shochiku product page confirms both the local and online limits.
How a mixed 2 + 2 session works
A 2 + 2 group fits the announced limits: two people play locally on one device, and two more join online from another device. The developer explicitly supports combining local split-screen with online play in its co-op FAQ.
Count every human player, including those sharing a screen. Mixed play does not expand a session beyond four people or allow four people to use split-screen on one device.
This describes a group arrangement. Compatibility between the devices or storefronts you choose is a separate check.
What Steam confirms about online play
The Steam store listing names Epic Online Services (EOS) for online multiplayer and says Steam account linking is supported. Take that account-service requirement into account when planning an online session.
The listing establishes the service used; it does not provide a verified sequence of menus for linking accounts, creating a lobby or inviting friends. We have not tested those screens. Follow the game's actual prompts and current official guidance rather than relying on invented setup instructions.
Using EOS also does not, by itself, establish which other platform versions can join a Steam player.
Crossplay: published support, with details to check
Microsoft's official Hela product catalog lists Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and cross-platform co-op. Cross-platform support therefore has a published official basis.
The catalog does not provide the full connection matrix for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. It also does not settle the invitation or account conditions for every pairing. We cannot confirm that all these versions connect to one another.
For a group using different systems, check the exact hardware and storefront combination. Treat player capacity and compatibility as two separate questions: a four-person arrangement can fit the announced limit while its chosen platform pairing still needs confirmation.
What this official-information guide covers
This guide summarizes public developer and store information reviewed on October 9, 2026. It is not based on hands-on gameplay. Our demo guide follows the developer’s published Remote Play instructions; native full-game lobby menus, controller arrangements, joining existing sessions and shared progress still need direct verification.
A full-game Friend’s Pass has not been confirmed in the sources checked. The Steam demo’s host-only Remote Play download requirement does not establish that feature for the full game.
Use the PC requirements guide for the published split-screen target, or the platforms guide when choosing an edition.
